Rehabilitation of Sewer Lines by Trenchless Technology, Mumbai

Purpose

Rehabilitation work is carried out with GRP Pipes, Structural Standalone Type-II liner withstanding combined ground water (hydrostatic) load, soil load and traffic load in its own right without requiring any structural contribution from the parent sewer and has the ability to resist corrosion in the atmosphere. The minimum life of installed GRP liner is 30 years.

Altogether, Structural Rehabilitation with GRP Pipes was carried out for 21 lines spanning 12.3 kms, covering areas such as Colaba, Bhuleshwar, Sane Guruji Marg, NM Joshi Marg, Mahim, Parel, Dadar, Dharavi and Bhandup, with drain sizes varying from 1050 mm to 2100 mm.

Challenges:

  • The Existing Sewer lines were in dilapidated state and deteriorated beyond repairs.
  • Since most of the sites were in congested, high-traffic areas, hence the trenchless technology was very effective.
  • Due to infrastructure projects like Metro Rail and Monorail, many trunk sewer lines were filled with cured RMC, obstructing the flow of wastewater.

Post Rehabilitation of Sewer Lines:

  • Structural stability of the lines was enhanced to 50 years.
  • Uninterrupted flow of wastewater ensured.
  • Surcharged manholes eliminated.
  • Leakages from existing sewers halted, preventing contamination of groundwater and potable water mains.
  • Minimized pumping costs for wastewater.
